The Saltwood case consists of the interesting testimony of John Flaxton, then 17 years old and a friend of his. This is the first story linking an appearance of UFOs as well as that of Mothman (or Owlman, winged creature). It took place on the evening of 16 November 1963, near the English village of Saltwood, in Kent.
Artistic interpretation of Mothman
According to John, the event happened one evening, while walking with his friend, when suddenly they observed an imposing “luminous ball” descending from the sky and then hovering above the ground. The two friends had the impression that the object in question was following their movements, until it vanished behind the surrounding trees.
Then, it would be at the time of the disappearance of the UFO that a winged creature would have made its appearance by “landing”. His appearance was so impressive that the two individuals immediately decided to flee.
According to the two witnesses, the creature did not appear to have a head and was the average size of a man, it also had wings that would have looked like those of bats. Here is a brief description of the case by John Flaxton:
” It was fantastic. The light, a yellow-red light, came from the sky at an angle of 60°. As she approached the ground, she seemed to glide more slowly.
She was about 90 meters from us, floating 3 meters above the ground. It seemed to follow our movements, stopping when we stopped, as if it was watching us. The light was oval, about 4.50 m to 6 m wide, with a bright and solid centre.
She disappeared behind the trees and, a few seconds later, a dark silhouette descended heavily. This one was all black, the size of a man, but without a head. She seemed to have wings on either side of her body, like a bat, and stumbled towards us. We didn’t wait to find out what it was. “
Later, many would associate this creature with Mothman, a testimony classified as “first encounter”, was brought to light three years later, on November 15, 1966 in Point Pleasant, United States.
