The ocean is, in many ways, another world. It is a place quite different from the Earth we know and we discover day by day. In the depths of this one is a small creature known as Idiacanthus atlanticus , also known as Black Dragonfish or Abyssal Dragon .

These fish have a rather special feature, indeed, they look remarkably like the creatures of the famous Aliens movies. The monster (or rather, alien) of the film was imagined by HR Giger, a Swiss artist. Fortunately, unlike the alien seen above, you really do not have to fear black dragon fish because they are very few and live deep in the ocean, far beyond where we, we can surrender.

Females measure about 40 cm. This may seem like a pretty big size, however, as you can see below, a lot of their body length comes from their long tail-like structure, their mouths are rather small and they only use it to eat d other fish. Males, on the other hand, are barely 5 cm long and have a number of other notable differences. They have no teeth or structure to “attack”, they are brown and have no digestive system. Finally, they do not look like female dragon fish. The distinct differences between the two sexes are known as “sexual dimorphism,” and scientists believe that the only purpose of males is reproduction.

Besides, their alien resemblances, black dragonfish can produce their own light, which is rather common among creatures that live in the black recesses of the ocean. You can find these tiny terrors at more than 2,000 meters deep. However, unlike most bioluminescent predators, who mainly use their light to attract prey, black dragonfish can also see their own light. Interestingly, the light produced by the fish is barely visible to the human eye without the aid of infrared tools.

So now, will you want one, or do you prefer to leave him alone where he is?
