Occultism is found absolutely everywhere in the world of esotericism and paranormal, but what is it? Why do people confuse occultism with Satanism and see the practitioners of the occult world with a very bad eye?

By its definition occultism is the practice of what is taboo, in a non-standardised version of society. It is then the learning of what is not allowed of normality and what must then remain hidden. It is not only witchcraft, it is beyond even man’s conscious perceptions. (VH image credit)

The occultism is then connected to what is called pseudo-science. In that it is studied astronomy, alchemy, spiritualism, alternative medicine, mediumship and divination. It is therefore the practice and the studies to what is not admitted of the society that refuses to admit alternative traditions and visible explanations to what is invisible.

The occultist is somewhere a magician, endowed with knowledge relating to these ancestral traditions as well on theory as on practice. It is therefore absolutely not the studies of Satanism or other magical traditions since the practice of the occult is an awakening of what is not visible all but it is above all an opening of consciousness and the unconscious in the energies surrounding man and nature.

Occultism and the awakening of ancestral traditions are found in France in the 1830s in the book of Eusèbe de Salverte through his book on occult sciences. The tradition awakens little by little by studying the ancient divinatory arts, magic but also practices related to the psychic and physical talents of the man. Papus, one of the most famous occultists in history, considered occultism as the learning of occult sciences but clearly expressed that the sciences acquired during these studies imposed to have a mental and moral stability of the strongest to support the very powerful and very heavy studies that the former centers of occult teachings gave, but especially, that the studies of the occult should never be used in order to harm one’s neighbor. Even if the movements of occultism date from the dawn of time but have had to be restricted because of religions, it is thus that learning had to resolve to be hidden from the eyes of all, in a world becoming increasingly closed to alternative beliefs outside Christianity, going so far as to hunt down, torture and murder those who refused to submit to the new religion.

Occultism is the belief in the occult sciences, in forces beyond our own perceptions that will always be surprising and enriching. Thus the practices of occultism clearly demonstrate a knowledge and a perfect mastery of the magical, divinatory, Kabbalistic arts but also the occult care (energetic care or magnetic care, corresponds to the magnetic fluid inside the man capable of healing various places of the human body or psychic bodies) by way of a mediumic opening and alchemy.

The esoteric movement, similar to occultism, aims more at a grouped and individualistic hermeticism with studies certainly similar to occultism but nevertheless different, because esotericism aims more at a spiritual relation with the notion of freedom of the practice of occult arts but also at a more framed use see according to certain aspects, religious. Thus, the practitioner of esotericism will be more in spiritual, theological or philosophical studies while the occultist will be more open to the different magical cultures and the various occult sciences with the aim of practicing and mastering his own psyche. On the foundations of occult arts the two movements are similar, but the difference is then related on the learning and use of occult sciences.

Occultism is divided into two categories: occult arts which are compulsory in practice, and occult sciences which are a more theological whole in the study of the occult.

This is how the occult arts are divided:

  • Alchemy (transmutation of metals and spirits)
  • Astrology (studies of the stars on matter and on human behaviour)
  • Divination or Mancie (intuitive clairvoyance for divination or mentalist for mantic)
  • Magic – Witchcraft
  • Occult medicine (energy care, magnetic care, radiesthesia)

Psychurgy, the opening of consciousness to the psyche in order to use it in a trance (psychokinesis, clairvoyance, experiences of leaving the body, mediumnity is thus linked to it since it is a psychic opening etc…)

  • Talismania (studies and acronym practices)
  • Chamanism (Invocation of spirits through sacred and psychic rituals).

As for the study of theoretical occult sciences, it is possible to find the following:

    • Doctrine of correspondences and analogies (correspondence between man and nature).

Kabbalah (Jewish spiritual study on the revelation of the divine human being before God, including the rules and consequences of the magical tradition and constituting a particular wisdom.)

  • The study of writings, letters and names (learning different occult dialects such as the Theban alphabet or futhark for example).
  • Number studies (numerology…).
  • Fakirisme (study of the extraordinary on human facts).
  • The study of occult symbols (these are the studies of different religious symbols through history whether monotheistic or polytheistic in nature, or one or more gods).

Over time occultism and its mystical approaches have evolved towards other observations with more scientific studies that will give rise to metapsychological research then become parapsychology and finally paranormal, including also special research movements such as ufology and cryptozoology. On the basis, occultism is connected in ancient traditions of paganism and shamanism, thus, the occultist is very precise in the studies of ancient psychic and religious doctrines, especially in those religions disappeared or almost totally annihilated by other monotheistic cultures. Thus, the occultist will have knowledge about the history of, for example, Druidism, paganism by knowing secrets and sometimes even having ancestral memories related to his past lives. It is known that occultists have already lived past lives in these ancient civilizations and therefore keep ancient memories innate, sometimes even inexplicable in order to continue his art through time.

Unfortunately, the monotheistic religions see in these studies of the occult permanent dangers going even to the point of confusing them unjustly with the black magic, of goétie or satanism. The occult does not mean dark, vulgar, whose nature is the destruction of man, it is the learning and evolution of psychic consciousness towards ritualized practices, natural alternatives linked to man’s innate and unknown capacities, but above all, an opening towards an infinite culture of what no longer exists nowadays.

Occultism simply means that they are studies of what is hidden from the sight of others and that is not movement related to rationalism and narrow-mindedness. It is therefore years of study and practice of ancient rites requiring knowledge of the consequences and use for practical purposes, the occultist thus knowing the traditions and variations of his own ritual, he is also inventive and creative and knows perfectly what he is doing. It should be known that many confuse witchcraft and occultism and put themselves in danger without knowing anything or even knowing nothing, which is dangerous and is not absolutely not occultism.
