In the animal kingdom, octopuses are among the most unique creatures, and a new study rightly suggests, that these octopuses are so unique, that they could come from space.
The theory that octopus are extraterrestrial beings was presented by a group of 33 scientists from around the world. Citing the intelligence of the octopus and these other assets, scientists believe that the animal was one of many forms of life from alien material from outer space. The study”Cause of Cambrian Explosion: Terrestrial or Cosmic ?” was published on 13 March 2018 in the journal Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology, but received media attention in May 2018.
So scientists have focused specifically on the genome that an octopus has.
The octopus genome is a labyrinth.” It is amazingly complex, with 33,000 coding genes, which is much more than Homo sapiens,” it is written in the study. Moreover, “his brain is voluminous, his nervous system is sophisticated, his eyes are dynamic, his body is supple and his camouflage is instantaneous thanks to his ability to change colour and shape. These are just some of the striking features that suddenly appeared on the evolutionary stage.
In the study, scientists then explain that cryopreserved “eggs” travelled to Earth from icy bodies in space. When eggs and/or embryos arrived on Earth hundreds of millions of years ago, they hatched.
This theory is part of panspermia, a concept that has been much debated in the scientific community since the 1970s. The idea with panspermia is that extraterrestrial life forms could have travelled from the rocks of space and finally arrived on Earth. The conditions of our planet made it conducive to the growth of life forms. Scientists who believe this theory cite the sudden appearance of new life forms about 270 million years ago in fossil records.
“It takes little imagination to consider that the massive extinction of Cambrian was correlated with the impact of a giant life-bearing comet (or comets), and the subsequent seeding of the Earth with new cosmic cell organisms and viral genes”, scientists wrote in the study.
However, the scientific community criticizes the whole theory. The reason why the theory has received so much media attention is that other scientists call it false.
“This article is useful, it draws attention and it is worth thinking about,” wrote molecular geneticist Karin Moelling. “Yet the main statement about viruses, microbes and even animals that have come to us from space cannot be taken seriously.”
There are several reasons why the scientific community rejects the whole theory. First, none of the meteorites collected on Earth contain any trace of “genetic material”. In fact, octopus genes are perfectly integrated into the genetic composition of life on Earth. As for the new life in the fossil record, most scientists agree that there are more plausible explanations than aliens.
The entire study that has been published contains no original research. Instead, the authors of the study referred only to their own work. But who is right?
